Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto is one of the greatest names in modern architecture and design. During his career, he designed many buildings in different parts of the world: concert halls, libraries, hospitals, museums, and private homes, including the Villa Mairea.

It was in 1924 that Aino Marsio went to work at architect Alvar Aalto's office. The two fell in love, married and began a long partnership. In 1932, Alvar Aalto, was beaten by his wife in a design competition. The winning entry, "Aalto glasses", also won a gold medal at the Milan Triennale.

Alvar Aalto actually made his international breakthrough as a furniture designer. Aalto wished to learn 'the language of wood fibres' and he believed that there is a positive effect when our skin comes into contact with natural materials. In 1935 Alvar Aalto founded the interior and sales company Artek with his collaborators. The idea was to design aesthetically simple furniture.Production became a huge success and Artek is still active.

Aalto also designed glass for Iittala. The curves of his Aalto vase has become a symbol for Finnish design. Furthermore he designed lighting pieces, furniture and textile patterns.
